Kats challenge entry

This painting was done for the Kats challenge for the Kats ebay group I belong to. It's a smallish group dedicated to cat artists. The theme was "colorful cats". If you're interested to see all the entries, go to ebay and do a search for "Kats challenge". This kitty is an Oiran, which is a high ranking courtesan from the Edo era. Of course there are no more Oiran working in Japan, but women still dress up as them for yearly festivals. An Oiran made her living from her body, using her beauty and social graces as her greatest assets. I don't know about you, but I would think a man would be completely terrified by such an amazingly dressed woman! Click here for the ebay auction!

What a wierd morning. It took forever to get my internet connection working - in the long run it turned out there was a power failure sometime before I got up and it screwed up the connection. The gas company is tearing up the lot across the street from me so the kiddies and kitty have something to watch to keep them amused. ^_^

Anyway, here's wednesday's aceo. I did another shiba for friday and it's ADORABLE but you'll have to wait.

New artwork

This week I decided to do a tribute piece to Utamaro - one of my favorite prints of his, because it's just so elegant. Also, it's a very unusual subject matter for modern times, that's for sure. I recently came across a picture of a modern geisha with blackened teeth - I wish I had bookmarked it.

New artwork!

Here's a cute painting of a kitty standing outside an Unagi (eel) restaurant. Broiled eels are a traditional summer treat in Japan that are thought to stimulate the appetite. The noren (hanging curtain sign) outside this restaurant has the work "Unagi" written on it in hiragana, and the "U" is written to look like an eel.

I've also added this design to my cafepress store - click here to purchase it on mugs, magnets, and other assorted goodies.
